Are all visas the same?

Each country deals with visitors in a different way, as some issue specific visas for different visitors. For example, in the UK, there are different tiered visas for students, business owners, skilled workers and so on. Some visas are only valid for a few days, whereas others are valid for several months. Some offer a single use, whereas others offer multiple entries into a country.

You will find that costs occur depending on where you are travelling to. Some countries don’t want to be spoiled by tourism and therefore charge a lot for a travel visa, with the hopes that it will deter people for staying for a long time. On the other hand, many are tourism friendly and want to encourage visitors to their country – Canada are particularly renowned for having a welcoming holiday visa scheme.

If you’re unsure of whether you need a holiday visa or not, it’s important to do a little bit of research before you set off on your adventures. If you are a UK citizen, you are currently free to travel around Europe without a visa, just as people who are from the EU are free to travel in the UK.

This is often referred to as the “free movement”, however after Britain’s decision to leave the EU, the concept of free movement is still being negotiated and Britons may have to apply for travel visas after 2020. More travel visa information will be released by the government nearer the time. On the other hand, America, Asia and Africa often require travel visas, but if you’re unsure, then you can use this resource to have a look before you set off on your adventure

What information do I need to get a visa?

It’s important to pre-plan your holiday visa before you travel to your destination, as the applications can take quite a while to go through and to be accepted. It’s better to be prepared than to not be allowed into the country because your visa hasn’t come through. In some cases, processing your application up to a few months before travelling can be extremely beneficial.

Again, every application process is different depending on the country you are traveling to. It’s important to make sure that you check the government website of the country you are visiting beforehand. This will give you all of the information you need to include, such as passport, employment details, nationality, any criminal offences that you will need to disclose etc.

Can I use my visa again?

Unfortunately, your visa is only valid on your trip within the dates specified. If you wish to visit the country again, even if it’s in the near future, then you will need to reapply for a visa. The only instance in which you don’t need to apply for a visa to return is if it’s a returning visa – meaning you’re a resident of that country (immigrant returning visa) or you have a temporary returning tourist visa. For example, the USA has an ESTA scheme meaning you can revisit the country multiple times over a two year period. This means that as long as you’ve received authorization, there’s no need to keep reapplying. This isn’t the case with most visas, so be sure to check before you travel.
